Apparently he said it to his wife before they were married. I'm sure he meant it as a compliment but, as a Mayfly only lives for a day perhaps it's a reference to the fleeting nature of beauty? Or maybe he means that, like a Mayfly, she will be beautiful for all of her life. I prefer the second interpretation :)
