The sweetest of words have the bitterest taste

First off a huge thank you to the beautiful Ciara for ringing me during James Vincent McMorrow at EP. Made missing it a little more bearable.

Anyway, when reflicking through the Fall 2010 pictures on style.com last week, I decided to have a proper look at Dolce and Gabbana. I'm not the biggest fan of the designer. Don't get me wrong they do leopard print and bodice work with the best of them and the couture is always amazing. But, like Roberto Cavalli, there will always be something about Dolce that I find tacky. Perhaps it's all the fake belts and bags that flood the wannabe wags wardrobes. Or perhaps it's that sometimes it just looks like upmarket Japan and Exhibit kind of crap.
Either way I'm not a huge fan.
Which is why I've only noticed these photos now.

My main issue isn't even the fact that there is hardly an ounce of flesh between them. Models are skinny. Got it, accepted, grand. What shocked me is how frail, worn and absolutely exhausted they all look. Like a crowd of corpses on a runway. Maybe this was the intention but, either way, they don't look well. The idea that they are healthy, and all just naturally gifted with powerful metabolisms, cannot possibly be used to explain this. Like I said, they do look thin, but sickly thin.
This isn't beauty. This is just plain wrong.

  1. Bravo! Thank GOD someone decided to point that out... Those girls look ill, not at all healthy, and to me, someone healthy and confident is beautiful. D&G aint gonna make me buy their clothes by hanging them on corpses.

  2. You are so right! As well as being terribly skinny, they look exhausted. They look like they don't care, they probably don't! Interesting post. :)

  3. the girl in the first foto is the worst, she really does look ill? how is this even seen as attractive or a good way to sell clothes, i dont get it? i feel sorry for these catwalk models, id say its a horrible enviorment to work in. women should be curvy, its feminine. the poor girls above just look like starved kids.

  4. I agree with Skinni about the first girl, she even has very visible bags under her eyes. And the left leg of the girl in the bottom right photo just freaks me out, its all sinewy and gross.

    Bravo, really good post.
